After the breakup of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1991, Moldova was one of many self-proclaimed country. Most of the people of that country was of Romanian origin (in fact was part of Romania until 1940), but a narrow region east of the country shared its roots with Russia and Ukraine. The Moldovan government's first measures were decreed by law Romanian language to reintroduce the Latin alphabet and use the currency of that country (Leu) as an officer, instead of Russian Cyrillic and the Soviet currency (Ruble).
